When I returned  from France in 1958, I took a long look at my paintings.
Everything I'd done up to that moment seemed to simply be a version
of someone else's work or teaching. I had mastered the tools of my craft, but felt I had nothing left to say with them.

I decided  to build a new life for myself, and create a new experience in which to ground my artwork. In the fall of 1959 I found the Big Sur Coast in California and, enchanted, made it my home. This decision would alter the course of my art career.

In 1961, I self-published "Big Sur, the Land of the Sun and the Moon".
It was a huge success, and a radical breakthrough in the way I worked.  Completely inspired by life in Big Sur, my art was finally connected to, and an expression of, my life.

I soon realized that the book was an authentic, one-of-a-kind piece of Folk Art .  I became a passionate devotee of the simple, joyous, happy, open -heartedness expressed in the artworks of children and Folk Artists. Over time I integrated those attributes into my art and my life.

To this day I am simply a happy guy who loves to paint. There are no hidden meanings in my work. What you see is what you get. Enjoy !!
